Santa Cruz, the pretty tangle of lanes beside the Cathedral, was once one of the largest Jewish quarters in Spain. Walk its real story — Sephardic Seville — with a licensed guide who specializes in it.
Before 1492, Seville held one of the most important Jewish communities in medieval Iberia, concentrated in what is now the Barrio de Santa Cruz. Behind the geraniums and orange trees lie the traces of synagogues turned into churches, the 1391 pogrom, and the Sephardic families whose names traveled the world. Altai Turismo’s Jewish heritage tour of Seville, designed by Sephardic-history specialist Alba Delgado, walks these streets with the depth they deserve.
This private walk recovers that layer of the city with genuine expertise. The route grows out of Alba's Master's research on Seville's Jewish Quarter — the same work behind Casa Sefardí de Sevilla, her online museum of Jewish Seville. Along the way you can add a visit inside Santa María la Blanca, the church built on the site of a medieval synagogue, and see the remains of a medieval mikveh — a Jewish ritual bath — beneath Casa Mikva. It is history told first-hand, not a generic old-town stroll.
